Chapter 367: Chapter 360: Blood Turned White

She held the thermometer in front of her eyes. Decent enough, 37 degrees, the fever had subsided.

She set the thermometer down and poured a glass of water for Gu Ning. She then walked to the door. With a casual movement, she closed it and took something out from her clothes. Seeing it, Gu Ning nearly spit out the water he’d just taken a sip of; he was always self-disciplined and had never been so taken aback before.

“Look,” Tang Zhengyu showed Gu Ning the object in her hand, “I secretly bought it and saved it for you while it was still hot.”

What she was holding were Baozi from Goubuli. It was challenging to buy these dumplings since all they’ve had lately were packed meals. She was already tired of them, hardly willing to part with the Baozi to eat herself, always thinking about him.

She stuffed the Baozi into Gu Ning’s hand. “You need to eat more, recover quicker. The sooner you leave the hospital, the better,” she said, glancing back outside. The cheerfulness in her eyes was gradually fading. “Things will get worse, and it’s risky for you to stay here. You should go home as soon as possible.”

“What about you?” Gu Ning asked, holding the Baozi to his mouth already taking a bite without any reservations.

“I’m a doctor, it’s my calling,” Tang Yu put her hand on her chest. Yes, this was her mission, one she had to accomplish. This was her battlefield; she wouldn’t want to be a deserter.

Gu Ning paused eating his Baozi and nibbled on it gently.

“Don’t let anyone find out,” Tang Yuxin shoved the remaining Baozi into his quilt. “Eat them when you feel hungry at night.”

With that said, she picked up her needle package, stuffed it into her clothing pocket, and left as if nothing had happened.

Gu Ning continued to eat the Baozi at his own pace. Suddenly, for some unknown reason, the corner of his mouth, which had been tense all along, broke into a rare smile.

“It’s okay, I can bear it.”

Shen Fei was drenched in cold sweat, but he still managed to smile. Compared to being amputated, to losing his legs completely, he was willing to stand ten times more pain.

When he realized his legs had been saved, he was on the verge of tears. Once he recovered, he could still walk with his own legs, could still run, still jump, and continue his life, instead of sitting in a wheelchair as a disabled person for life.

“It will be alright after a few days,” Tang Yuxin said while pulling back the blanket to check Shen Fei’s legs’ situation. “Approximately another week of observation and, if everything’s alright, you can be transferred.”

“Transferred?” Shen Fei was taken aback, almost unable to withstand the pain in his legs.

“Doctor, why do I need to be transferred? Are you not going to treat me anymore?” The thought made him try to sit up, forgetting that he couldn’t even move, let alone sit. The struggle caused his leg bones to creak, intensifying the intense pain.

“Don’t move,” Tang Yuxin quickly restrained Shen Fei’s shoulders, “Your transfer is because the situation here could become unsafe.”

“Unsafe?” Shen Fei couldn’t understand why a hospital could be unsafe.

“Beijing is now the hardest hit area for SARS, and our hospital is likely to be dedicated to treating these patients.”

Shen Fei understood. In other words, the entire hospital was to be quarantined.

“Then, what about me...?” He was still concerned about his legs.

“There’s no need to worry. After this, regular rest and the removal of the steel bars in your leg is required, which any doctor can perform,”

Tang Yuxin checked Shen Fei’s legs again before leaving. The number of patients brought in recently was steadily increasing and the situation was getting severe. Mathematically, the entire hospital would be quarantined in less than a week. Until SARS containment, they might not see sunlight.
