Villa Petrikor by CO-LAB is located in a tropical garden in Tulum.

Arched openings create a sense of flow within this vacation home, created by Mexican studio CO-LAB Design Office, designed to encourage occupants to feel connected to the lush surroundings.
Villa Petriko is located on a slender slope with tropical vegetation in the beach town of Tulum. House of 300 sq. m is designed taking into account the prevailing winds.
Named for the “earthly scent of rain falling on dry soil”, the residence is designed to evoke a sense of rebirth and tranquility.
“Villa Petrikor connects us to the natural world by providing spaces that encourage us to slow down and admire the beauty of the moment,” said the local CO-LAB Design Office.
The concrete house is built around several groups of trees and the windows are strategically placed to provide a “green view”. Glass windows also let in daylight and make shadows dance across the walls.
“The shadows cast by the surrounding vegetation enhance the natural presence in all rooms of the home,” the team said.
On the entrance façade, the team created a unique concrete block sunshade. Screens allow you to look at the interior while providing privacy.
The walkway leading to the front door is topped with a canopy with round holes to allow the trees to grow upwards.
The interior has many arched openings and niches, creating a sense of flow between rooms and between interior and exterior.
The first floor has two bedrooms and an open space for relaxing, cooking and dining. Large swing doors lead out to the patio and pool area.
“Fitted furniture such as platform beds and benches blend with the walls, floor and vaulted ceiling to create a continuous, seamless space,” the studio said in a statement.
The home’s individual finishes have been carefully considered to help create a serene atmosphere and a “sculptural overall interior”.
The walls are made of polished cement and the floor is covered in terrazzo. Both materials are colored with mineral pigments, which are mixed on site.
“Washed light on walls and floors enhances the texture of polished cement interiors, revealing the flawlessly imperfect handwork of local artisans,” the studio said in a statement.
Santo Tomas marble, quarried in Mexico, has been used for kitchen countertops and bathroom elements. The same marble was used for the dining table designed by the architect, mostly built on site.
CO-LAB, founded in 2010, has completed several projects in Tulum. Others include a bamboo yoga pavilion and a relaxation house with large openings and a rustic-style dug-stone backyard wall.
