In most cases, 404GP™ steel can be used instead of 304 stainless steel. The corrosion resistance of 404GP™ grade is not inferior to that of 304 grade, but usually higher: it does not suffer from stress corrosion cracking in hot water and does not increase welding sensitivity.
The 404GP™ grade is a next generation ferritic stainless steel produced by a premium Japanese steel mill using the most advanced next generation steel technology, Ultra Low Carbon.
The 404GP™ grade can be machined with all the methods used with 304. It is hardened like carbon steel so it does not cause all the problems that 304 workers are familiar with.
The very high chromium content (21%) in 404GP™ grade makes it much more corrosion resistant than regular 430 ferritic grade. So don’t worry, 404GP™ grades are magnetic, as are all duplex grades like 2205.
You can use 404GP™ as a general purpose stainless steel in place of the old workhorse 304 in most applications. 404GP™ grade is easier to cut, bend, bend and weld than 304 grade. This results in a better looking job – sharper edges and curves, flatter panels, cleaner construction.
As a ferritic stainless steel, 404GP™ grade has higher yield strength than 304, similar hardness, but lower tensile strength and tensile elongation. It has a much lower work hardening which makes it easier to machine and behaves like carbon steel when made.
The 404GP™ grade costs 20% less than the 304. It weighs less and adds 3.5% more square meters per kilogram. Better machinability reduces labor, tooling and maintenance costs.
Austral Wright Metals now stocks 404GP™ steel in coils and sheets in 0.55, 0.7, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0mm thicknesses.
Finishes No4 and 2B. The 2B finish on Grade 404GP™ is brighter than 304. Do not use 2B where appearance is important – gloss may vary across width.
Grade 404GP™ is weldable. TIG, MIG, spot and seam welding can be used. See Austral Wright Metals recommendations “Welding next generation ferritic stainless steels”.

The 404GP™ grade is a next generation ferritic stainless steel from JFE Steel Corporation’s premium Japanese mill under the brand name 443CT. The alloy is new, but the factory has years of experience with similar high quality grades and you can be sure it won’t let you down.
As with all ferritic stainless steels, 404GP™ grade should only be used between 0ºC and 400°C and should not be used in pressure vessels or structures without full qualification.

We are looking for a lightweight replacement for SS202/304. The 404GP is ideal, but should be at least 25% lighter than the SS304. Can this composite/alloy be used.Ganesha
