The Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models will arrive at Harley-Davidson dealerships in spring 2021.
The system responds to suspension position, vehicle speed, vertical acceleration, roll angle and rate, throttle, brakes, and selected riding mode to maintain the desired comfort setting. Five pre-programmed profiles are built into each riding mode:
Comfort: The increased elasticity of the suspension isolates the rider from rough terrain. Balance: Balance comfort and handling for an all-round ride. Sport: Maximum ride control and higher damping ratios – what we call “Spirit Ride” washboards and rocky terrain. Off-Road Rigidity: Increases initial damping for aggressive riding or requires less body buoyancy: Ideal for soft/loamy terrain.
Off-Road Ready The 1250 Special has a few upgrades as standard for when you’re off the beaten track. The aluminum skid plate protects the engine crankcase from impacts. The brush guards protect the radiator and help prevent the motorcycle from tipping over. The steering damper improves dynamics during aggressive off-road driving. Tool-less adjustable brake pedal with two-position switch for greater rider control and comfort while standing. Semi-active front and rear suspension with dedicated off-road mode programming helps the rider maintain traction and control on rough roads and rugged terrain.
High Expectations The Pan America 1250 features the latest technology you’ve come to expect in this category: a six-axis IMU, customizable ride modes, Bluetooth connectivity, and moving map navigation on a 6.8-inch (173mm) touchscreen display.
Stainless steel laced wheels are available as a factory fitted option with stainless steel spokes embedded in an aluminum rim on the outside of the tire bead. These wheels give the driver a number of advantages over cast wheels in off-road conditions.
This design allows tubeless tires to be used, which reduces the weight of the tube and allows the spokes to be repaired in the field. If a spoke is loose or broken, it can be repaired or the driven wheel tire replaced without removing the wheel from the motorcycle or removing the spokes.
Using the ABS IMU to detect the lean angle of the motorcycle, the system automatically projects additional light into corners to illuminate sections of the road that cannot be illuminated by LED headlights with this technology.
Each side consists of three LED elements located directly above the main Daymaker® headlamp. Adaptive headlights turn on sequentially depending on the angle of the motorcycle: 8, 15 and 23 degrees. Instead of just turning on and off, the current element of Adaptive Light fades in, so the additional lighting is gradual and seemingly seamless.
This revolutionary suspension system automatically shifts the motorcycle between a low stopping position and optimum ride height when the motorcycle is in motion. This system allows riders to easily mount the Pan America 1250 Special by lowering the seat height by 1 to 2 inches (depending on automatically selected rear end preload, which determines how high the bike rides while riding). The unloaded seat height is 32.7 inches in the down position and 33.7 inches in the up position. The ARH retains all the characteristics of semi-active front and rear suspension.
The Harley-Davidson® Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special are the new adventure touring bikes. Harley-Davidson has used its deep engineering expertise to equip these motorcycles with cutting-edge technologies designed to enhance driving pleasure.
Semi-Active Suspension Pan America 1250 Special models feature semi-active electronically adjustable front and rear suspension. Using data from sensors on the motorcycle, the suspension system automatically adjusts the damping according to the prevailing conditions and riding style. These suspension components are provided by SHOWA® and the control software is developed by Harley-Davidson.
Adaptive ride height (ARH) is only available on Pan America 1250 Special models. Harley-Davidson was the first in the motorcycle industry to offer this technology. This evolutionary suspension system automatically shifts the bike between a low stop position and optimum ride height when the bike is in motion. This system allows riders to easily install a Pan America 1250 Special by lowering the seat height by 1 to 2 inches (depending on the automatically selected rear preload, which determines the ride height of the bike).
The system does not affect suspension travel – it remains – and does not affect rake angle, ride height or ride quality.
Enhanced Cornering Safety The Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models are equipped with a range of technologies designed to match the motorcycle’s performance to the available grip* during acceleration, deceleration and braking. The system is designed to assist the rider in controlling the motorcycle when accelerating and braking in a straight line or when cornering. Drivers may find these systems most useful when driving in poor road conditions or in unexpected situations. These systems are electronic and use the latest in chassis control, electronic brake control and transmission technology.
*Disclaimer: Available traction is dependent on tire/road interface. The system can only adjust the brake pressure or transmission torque so that the forces acting on the tires do not exceed the available traction. These technologies cannot increase traction, cannot intervene when the driver is not pressing the brake or accelerator, and cannot directly affect the vehicle’s direction of travel. This is the key difference between motorcycle systems and automotive stability control systems. Ultimately, the driver is responsible for adjusting steering, speed and trajectory.
Some elements of cornering safety enhancements can be “corner-enhanced” through motorcycle-specific technology. The Inertial Measurement Unit, or IMU, measures and reports the angle of the motorcycle when cornering. Since many motorcycles have different front and rear tire sizes, the wheels start to spin at slightly different speeds when the motorcycle enters a turn. The grip patch of a tire – the part of the tire that actually makes contact with the road – also changes when the bike leans into corners. Cornering Enhancement Technology takes this into account and intervenes differently when the bike is leaning than when it is upright for optimal performance.
Enhanced Electronically Linked Braking (C-ELB) provides balanced front and rear braking under various braking conditions when cornering. This system allows for more coupling when the rider applies harder brakes and reduces or eliminates coupling at light braking and low speeds. When connected, using only the front brake levers will cause the system to dynamically apply a certain amount of braking to the rear brakes as well. C-ELB takes the bike’s lean angle into account and changes the brake pressure ratio between the front and rear brakes when cornering in an attempt to improve the bike’s ability to maintain the rider’s intended path. C-ELB is disabled when the driver selects Off-Road Plus or Custom Off-Road Plus driving modes (see Riding Modes section).
ABS is designed to prevent the wheels from locking up when braking and helps the driver maintain control when braking in straight and narrow sections. ABS works independently of the front and rear brakes to keep the wheels moving and prevent uncontrolled wheel lockup. Advanced Cornering Anti-Lock Braking System (C-ABS) is a variant of ABS that takes into account the angle of the motorcycle. In corners, the available brake grip decreases and the C-ABS system automatically compensates for this.
The rear wheel lift prevention system uses C-ABS sensors and a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) to control rear wheel lift during hard braking and further balance deceleration and rider control. RLM height and duration are related to the selected riding mode. RLM provides minimum rear wheel lift in rain mode and maximum rear wheel lift in off-road mode. ABS and RLM on the rear wheel are disabled when the driver selects Off-Road Plus or Custom Off-Road Plus driving modes (see Riding Modes section).
